Join us April 1st at 6pm for our next Bio Art Mixer, featuring Mirna Mihovilovic Skanata (Physics, SU) and Guy Ben-Ary (http://guybenary.com).

Guy Ben-Ary is an artist and a researcher at Symbiotica, an artistic laboratory dedicated to the research, learning and hands-on engagement with the life sciences. Recognized internationally as a major artist and innovator working across science and media arts, Guy specializes in biotechnological artwork, which aims to enrich our understanding of what it means to be alive. In his talk, Guy will present his recent projects (cellF, Bricolage and Revivification) and propose a new theoretical framework to support their understanding as - ‘In-vitro intelligence’ driven surrogate performers. Guy quotes his famous piece “cellF” as being the world’s first neural synthesizer (https://youtu.be/1G-vk5QWRsg). It is a real “wet-alogue” Synthesizer.
cellF’s “brain” is made of a biological neural network that grows in a Petri dish and controls in real time an array of analogue modular synthesizers that were custom made to work in synergy with the neural network. It is a completely autonomous, wet and analogue instrument. Mirna Mihovilovic Skanata is a neuroscientist with a knack for visualizing the impossible. Mirna uses the fruit fly to understand how neural circuits encode multi-sensory information and make decisions. Her innovative microscopic approaches allow her to access and image neurons deep within the brain.

The Bio Art Mixer is where art and life sciences meet, faculty and grads share their research or look at it from the perspective of a different discipline. Initiated by Heidi Hehnly, Ph.D. Biology, SU; Boryana Rossa Ph.D. Transmedia, SU in collaboration with Canary Lab. This specific Bio Art Mixer is in collaboration with BioInspired’s Development and Disease subgroup organized by Heidi Hehnly and Alison Patteson.
